While the merits of charter schools are many, Academy Charter School has taken the bar much higher by being responsive to children’s needs and offering high standards. Located in Palmer, Alaska, the school offers outstanding education to 231 students over eight grades. Admission is sopen to all students belonging to the Matanuska Susitna Borough School District.
The school ventured on a journey of development in phases over the years. Having applied for a Charter in 1995, it never looked back. The 3.77 acres of land on which the Academy stands, was painstakingly converted into a most comfortable school with all facilities. Starting with a small Kindergarten class of 20 in 1997, the Academy Charter School has expanded up to the eighth grade.
This K8 charter school follows the unique Core Knowledge curriculum created to develop students’ core abilities. It stresses on subjects like arts, sciences, technology, as well as math and language, where students are grouped by achievement level. The faculty consists of teachers with subject-area specialization. Students’ capabilities are enhanced through various academic contests at all stages.
Through Music and Performing Arts and Visual Arts, the school encourages students to appreciate arts. Physical fitness is part of the education just as language is, and the school has a full-sized beautiful gymnasium. Students seeking sports opportunities in fields like basketball, field and track etc. are also facilitated. Parent participation is considered vital at this school.
