Akimel OOtham Pee Posh opened in 1999 as a charter school serving grades kindergarten through fifth. The school offers a diverse learning environment that recognizes and develops cultures and as well as unique languages via the curriculum as well as interpersonal hands on learning.
The school is very close knit with 94% of the student body being American Indian, with enrollment open to all nationalities and cultures. The school is supported by the community as well as the Gila River Indian Community sovereign government and other community leaders.
The learning environment put the child at the center with hands on learning tools that allow each student to develop their own unique learning styles but with proper instruction in a nurturing and caring environment. All curriculum is based on the ability of each child separately as well as in a group setting. The main mission of Akimel OOtham Pee Posh is to instill in each child the value of culture, respect for self, respect for others, and the value of language as it pertains to the world.
In recent years, the Akimel OOtham Pee Posh Elementary School made the Adequate Yearly Progress as required under No Child Left Behind for third and fourth grades. The school meets or exceeds all requirements set forth by the state of Arizona.
Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades were required by the state of Arizona to be evaluated by the administering of the Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards test, which measures how the students have mastered the standards set forth by the state. All figures are the percentage of students that met or exceeded the state standards at Akimel OOtham Pee Posh Elementary School. The percentages of third graders that met or exceeded the state standards in math was 88% with state averages being 76%, in writing the students percentage was 75% with the state average at 79%, in math the students percentage was 60% with the state average being 68%. In reading, 60% of 4th graders met or exceeded state requirements with the average for the state being 75%, science the figure as 30% for students and state average was 60%, in math the percentage was 53% while the state average was 65%. The writing test was administered with 74% of students in 4th grade meeting or exceeding while the state average was 83%. Fifth graders were tested in reading, writing, and math with percentages in reading meeting or exceeding state standards was 68% and state average was 79%, in writing 35% with state average at 55%, and math percentages was 43% with the state average at 63%.
