Alta Vista Charter High School opened in 2003 to provide a quality education for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school prides itself on helping students to develop skills as well as the knowledge, understanding, and even the attitudes needed to become happy and productive citizens in their community.
The Arizona Department of Education has classified Alta Vista Charter High School as a performing school and it did meet the Adequate Yearly Progress that is the test that is given to all students attending public schools in the state.
The core subjects at the school include English, English Language Development, Enrichment Classes, Mathematics, Physical Education/Health, Science, and Social Studies. All courses met or exceed the standards set forth by the state of Arizona.
Sports offered at Alta Vista Charter High School include boy’s basketball, volleyball, soccer for both boys and girls, and cheerleading. Before students can participate in any sport, they must have at least a 2.0 grade point average and have a spotless discipline record. Extra curricular activities offered include computer arts and drawing, with the only special program being Science & technology. The only language taught at the high school is Spanish.
Most parents are pleased with the progress of their children attending the school, however, are not too excited about the idea that the city bus is used to take the students to physical education classes. For a charter school this one seems a bit lacking in the courses available as most offer a larger selection of courses to help enhance the students learning experience. The courses do not seem to be much different from a regular public school.
Students at Alta Vista Charter High School in 10th grade took the Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS), which is a test, administered to measure the knowledge of the students as well as their mastery of the learning standards. The only grade that must take the test by state law in high school is 10th grade. All students must pass this test in order to graduate high school.
65% of 10th graders met or exceeded the requirements with the state average being 78% in reading, in science only 17% meet the requirements while the state average was 42%, in writing 47% of students meet the requirements while the state average was 68%, and in math 40% of students passed while 60% students across the state passed the test.
