Located in beautiful scenic Alaska, American Charter Academy is believed to be where education gets an upgrade. One of Mat-Su Valley’s smaller schools, it serves students from the 2nd grade through graduation, offering a standards-based environment with a hands-on approach to meet the requirements of graduation. It inculcates the attitude that anyone can be successful if they are willing to work.
American Charter is a restart charter school, which was earlier called MidValley High School. The Mat-Su School Board approved the reorganization in order to help the school better its achievement levels. The past year has seen the school achieve academic success of a higher magnitude, which is proof of the restart model proving itself and attracting many more students.
This school follows a dramatic shift in the education process using a standards-based model that delivers on the promise of education to every child. Students work on their knowledge level and not at a grade level, ensuring they master each standard before moving ahead to the next level. Students are prepared for state-wide scholarships to help them pursue their education and preparation for work after graduation.
In 2010-2011, the school showed a significant improvement in its graduation rates. Experimental labs and hands-on projects help students accentuate their strengths and help work on their weaknesses. Recently, students of this school created an award winning ad for the Mat-Su Borough’s new Alaska Vanpool Program. There are plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, camping, biking, and snowshoeing among others.
