Arizona Academy of Leadership – South Review

The Arizona Academy of Leadership opened their charter school in 2007 for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The school offers an all day kindergarten along with Spanish program for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. All curriculum is centered on leadership and community service.

The school has mixed reviews from both students and parents. The main negative reviews are regarding the administrative staff with a few reviews of teachers. As reported by parents the school has not provided the necessary tools for educating students the last two to three years, with staff offering parties for students that passed or exceeded the AIMS testing scores, but the promised party never materialized. The school is low on funding and therefore does not have the necessary text books for students along with other tools that could help teachers fulfill the needs of their students as explained by one of the teachers that withheld their name.

Most teachers and parents do not give the school a good review at all and even go as far to tell parents to place their children in a different school.

On the other hand, if you read reviews from parents that had students attending in 2008, the reviews were excellent. It seems that administration may have changed or funds needed to provide a quality education have not materialized for the school in recent years.

In the state of Arizona all students in specific grades are required to take the AIMS exam, which evaluates the knowledge the students are absorbing. Students at Arizona Academy of Leadership in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades took the test. The percentages listed are the percentage of the students at the school that passed or exceeded the exam with the average of students across the state that also passed or exceeded the exam in each course.

Recently, 56% of 3rd graders passed with the state average at 76% and in math 50% with the state average at 68%. In reading, 4th graders scored 79% with the state average 75%, in science 50% with the state average 60%, and in math 43% with the state average at 65%. 5th graders in reading that passed the test was 65% with the state average being 79%, in writing 29% with the state average being 55%, and in math 35% with the state average at 63%. In reading 6th graders that passed or exceeded the exam was 75% with the state average 81%, in writing 38% with the state at 56%, and in math the percentage was 42% with the state average 59%. The percentage of 7th graders that passed or exceeded the reading exam was 60% with the state average 82%, in writing 35% with the state at 53%, and in math 35% with the state being 61%. In reading, 8th graders scored 50% with the state average at 71%, in science 57% with the state average at 63%, and in math 57% with the state average at 54%.

The test scores overall are very poor except for a few such as math for 8th graders and in reading for 4th graders.
