Arizona Academy of Science Review

The Arizona Academy of Science opened their charter school in 1999 and on average have an enrollment of 112 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. The school prides itself on its unique curriculum that centers on science and technology to help students be better prepared to become leaders of society.

The elementary and middle school offers a rigorous academic program with core subjects including math, reading, writing, and hands on biological and physical sciences. All students in 3rd through 6th grades will have one teacher for all core classes. The school also offers no more than 20 students per classroom, individual learning, and after school programs.

Extracurricular activities offered at Arizona Academy of Science include computer arts and painting, with foreign languages taught being Japanese. The only sports activity included are physical education classes. Special programs students enjoy include academic contests, yearbook, newspaper, and science & technology.

You may hear different reviews from parents regarding the curriculum, however, the majority of parents are very satisfied with all the courses, teachers, and staff. The science program is one of the most amazing offering such things as an organic garden, a kinder with hermit crabs, hamsters, fish, with most courses being weaved with science.

On the other hand, the school has a new administration staff that is not living up to the expectations of parents.

Students at Arizona Academy of Science took the AIMS exam, which is a requirement of the state for public student in specific grades to ensure they are learning at the standards set forth by the state. All percentages are for students that passed or exceeded the exam with the average of students across the state.

Third graders were tested in reading with 28% passing with the state average at 76% and in math with only 6% passing the exam while the state average was 68%. Fourth graders were tested in reading with 50% passing while the state average was 75%, science percentage was 36% with the state average being 60%, and in math, only 7% passed with the state average at 65%. Fifth grade test results were not available. Sixth graders were tested in reading with 60% passing and the state average at 81%, in writing 20% passed while the state average was 56%, and in math 20% with the state being 59%. Seventh graders were tested in reading with 81% passing the exam with the state average at 82%. Eighth graders were tested in reading with 80% passing the exam while the state average was 71%, in science 60% passed with the state average at 63%, and in math 20% with the state average being 54%.

The test scores are quite low in most cases besides 7th graders for reading and 8th graders in reading and science. For a school that prides itself on its science program, I would have expected higher scores in science.
