Barack Obama Charter opened in 2009 for students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The school uses a learning approach known as re-inventing schools model, which is not based on time but on performance. The individualized learning plans help students learn at his or her own pace while teacher lead instruction is replaced with student centered learning. The students are not placed in same age classrooms but are placed in groups according to their development levels. The school does not offer any extra curricular activities but does offer tutoring before and after school.
Parents are very happy with the close-knit environment that is helping their children learn and progress. Parents expressed the school is safe and that the teachers work with each student to ensure they are learning at levels that are amazing. Teachers are very caring and nurturing and want students to succeed. Some parents stated that the school is doing an above average job of educating their children and help them grow socially as well as academically.
According to the Academic Performance Index, the school had quite a bit of grow since the previous year with the base at 575 and this year being 750. The percentage of students that passed the California Standards Tests showed below average, average, and above average according to the grade level and the course. On a good note, the percentages were better than the previous year.
The school is doing a good job providing students with a learning environment that provides encouragement and the tools needed to succeed. To make sure the school is the right fit for your child you should visit the school. Another good idea is to talk with teachers as well as other parents that have students enrolled before you make your decision.
