BASIS Scottsdale Review

BASIS opened their Scottsdale charter school campus in 1999 for students in grades 5th through 12th. The average enrollment is 595 students per year. The school curriculum is challenging offering a liberal arts college preparatory scheme.

Along with the advanced curriculum, BASIS provides extra curricular activities including band, orchestra, chorus, photography, sculpture, painting, and theater. Sports offered for boys include basketball, tennis, flag football, and fencing. Sports offered for girls include basketball; tennis; volleyball; flag football, and fencing. Languages taught include French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.

The school has received excellent ratings and even ranked in the top schools for overall academic performance by BusinessWeek.

Parents are very pleased with the curriculum offered at BASIS, which is often more challenging than what is seen at many private schools. The school is strict and expects students to do what is asked and required of them to succeed. One parent was thrilled that her 7th grader was taking courses such as pre-calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, and was in her second year of Latin.

Other parents are pleased with not only the academic standards but also the small classrooms where students can receive individual attention when required.

As with all public schools in Arizona, including public charter schools, the state requires students in specific grades to take and pass the AIMS exam, which measures their level of mastering the core subjects. Students that passed or exceeded the requirements are listed below along with state averages.

In reading, 100% of 5th graders passed with the state average being 79%, in writing 94% with the state at 55%, and in math 99% with the state at 63%. In reading, 100% of 6th graders passed with the state average being 81%, in writing 97% with the state at 56%, and in math 99% with the state at 59%. In reading, 99% of 7th graders passed with the state average being 82%, in writing 95% with the state at 53%, and in math 99% with the state at 61%. In reading, 100% of 8th graders passed with the state average being 71%, in science 100% with the state average at 63%, in writing 100% with the state at 86%, and in math 100% with the state at 54%. In reading, 100% of 10th graders passed with the state average being 78%, in science 100% with the state average at 42%, in writing 100% with the state at 68%, and in math 100% with the state at 60%.
