Big Sur Charter School opened in 2008 for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school offers an alternative to traditional school with personalized learning plans, small group instruction, CA core standards curriculum, hands-on projects, arts education, music education, service learning, and nature studies.

Students that enroll in Big Sur Charter School have the freedom to study at home while meeting two days each week at the school for enrichment programs. The students have the help of a qualified teacher that works with each student on a more personal level with in-depth students of local natural and cultural history, ecosystems, and more. The school also provides classroom programs and field trips to ensure students are receiving the best possible education.

Parents are very happy with the support they receive from their personal teacher and the school. The school provides excellent support that helps students succeed. What some parents like about the school is that is small and simple but provides students with what they need to know in an ever-changing world. Students expressed how much they enjoy studying at home and making friends at the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed that Big Sur Charter School had academic growth over the previous year with base points at 797 and this year at 849. The school has 100% graduation rate with all students that graduated completed all courses that are required to enter California State or University of California. The percentage of students that passed or exceeded the California Standards Tests was not available at the time of this writing.

Since the parents and students all give positive comments, the API showed marked improvement, and the high graduation rate, the school is doing an excellent job of providing students with the knowledge they need to succeed. Along with this, students are learning how to become in their community and learn more about the earth and how to ensure resources are available for years to come.
