Blue Oak Charter School opened in 2001 to provide a quality education for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers small class size and dedicated teachers that want each student to succeed. The school prides itself on being a community that offers both families and students a new look at education that uses the Waldorf method and ensures that all California State Standards are met. The school does not only provide students with academic skills but works with the whole child to ensure they are ready for the remainder of their educational years. The curriculum helps to instill wonderment, excitement, and produces life long learners.
The unique factor that makes this school different from traditional schools is that they not only encourage parent involvement, but also requires parents to serve 50 volunteer hours each year.
Along with core subjects, Blue Oak Charter School offers extra curricular activities, which include orchestra, band, dance, chorus, drama, painting, and ceramics. Sports offered include yoga, physical education classes, fencing, wrestling, and bicycling. Other programs found at the school are community service, newspaper, student council, and yearbook. The vocational program available is agriculture.
The majority of parents love the school and are so happy they have a choice in Chico other than traditional schools. Parents expressed that the academics are excellent and all the choices offered to students is amazing. The orchestra is one of the most popular activities that many of the students truly enjoy. Students and parents both expressed that the curricular is challenging and exciting. Students said they really like their teachers and they are very helpful.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth over the base score of 720 to 790. When it comes to the California Standards Tests, 2nd and 3rd graders were below average in both English Language Arts and Math. Fourth graders were above state averages. Fifth graders were above average in English Language Arts and Science but below average in math. Sixth and Seventh graders were above average in all courses. Eighth graders were above average in science and English Language Arts but were below average history and algebra I.
The school seems to be doing a good job with most grade levels performing at around average give or take a few percentages. It would be a good idea to learn more about the Waldorf curriculum to ensure you agree with the program as well as take a tour of the school to ensure it is a good fit for your family.
