Bright Star Secondary Academy is a public charter school, which opened in 2006 for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a very unique learning environment with mandatory academic summer camp. The school offers a variety of educational benefits, which are usually not offered at traditional schools. These include Team Building and Character Education Development, Spanish Literacy Program, Arts and Athletic Programs, Out-of-class Educational Opportunities such as Service Learning and experiential field trips throughout the country.
Along with core subjects and the programs mentioned above, Bright Star Secondary Academy offers extra curricular including drama, dance, band, drawing, and orchestra. Students can join sports including baseball, basketball, badminton, cheerleading, football, cross-country, physical education classes, martial arts, swimming, soccer, softball, track, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball. Other programs include student council, yearbook, science & technology, debate, community service, newspaper, and academic contests. The vocational opportunities include technology and health careers.
Parents expressed the school is strict which is a good change from traditional schools. The school expects students to do their best and to be respectful of others. Teachers provide one on one attention to all students and are dedicated to their success. Teachers motivate and encourage students to succeed and go on to college after graduation. Students expressed the school is great with caring teachers. Most students stated they like the school and the way they are noticed by teachers and staff instead of just being a face in the crowd.
The Academic Performance Index showed a small decline in the academic performance from 842 to 820. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students that passed the exams at Bright Star Secondary Academy was above average across the board in all courses. The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English, 94% of students passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 88% passed with the state average at 84%. The school has a 100% graduation rate.
