Bullis Charter School opened in 2004 in Los Altos to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers a structured learning environment with individualized and project based learning. The public charter school offers hands-on projects with a unique program that provides each student with focused learning goals based on their own needs including academics to social skills to organizational skills. Students work on project based learning using a variety of tools that fit their own unique learning styles while applying concepts to real life learning options. All students take part in dance, drama, vocal, science, art, instrumental music, and physical education classes. Students in 7th and 8th grade can enjoy block scheduling which aids with more opportunities for each student.
Along with the above programs and core subjects students can join other extra curricular activities, which include band, computer arts, orchestra, photography, film production, ceramics, and drawing. Languages offered are Mandarin, Russian, Latin, Spanish, and French. Sports available include basketball, badminton, baseball, fencing, cross-country, football, martial arts, track, soccer, tennis, yoga, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball. Other programs students can join include debate, multimedia, newspaper, student council, and yearbook.
Parents are very impressed with the school community, dedicated teachers, communication on all levels, and the close-knit learning environment. The school spirit as explained by both parents and teachers is amazing. A few parents stated they really like the way the students are evaluated by teachers to find their strong and weak points and then work to ensure all the needs of each student are met whether it is socially, academically, or emotionally. One compliant of parents is the longer school day, which is not, seen at public schools, but overall all parents are happy with the curriculum and staff. Students expressed they like their teachers and want to go to school and learn.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 984 to 994.
The California Standards Tests are used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students that passed the California Standards Tests at Bullis Charter School were all above state average with 98% to 100% of all students passing the exams in all grades and across all subjects.
The school is doing an excellent job of providing students with the educational tools they need to succeed and learn in a caring and nurturing environment.
