Calabash Charter Academy once known as Calabash Street Elementary originally opened in 1959. The school offers a multicultural learning environment providing the community the educational environment they need for their children to succeed. The student population has a total of eleven different first languages spoken in the home, which include Spanish, Farsi, Tagali, and Italian to name a few. The population is very diverse offers students in kindergarten through 5th grades with a wonderful learning experience. The school became a charter school in 2011 and is now known as Calabash Charter Academy.
Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities including drama, chorus, drawing, sculpture, dance, photography, film production, computer arts, and band. Sports available include yoga, volleyball, tennis, physical education classes, gymnastics, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, softball, and soccer. Other programs that students can join are science & technology, debate, community service, multimedia, yearbook, student council, and newspaper.
Parents absolutely love the GATE classes as well as students are taught more than just what is found in books. They are taught respect, communication, and organization skills along with so much more. Most parents expressed that the staff, teachers, and principal are amazing and do a very good job of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment. Students really like their teachers and are learning more than they did at other schools.
The Academic Performance Index showed a small decline in academic growth from 879 to 878.
The California Standards Tests is used to determine if students are mastering core subjects. Various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. Students at Calabash Charter Academy were up and down in the number of students passing the exams. Examples of the results are 68% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 75% and the percentage of 5th graders that passed the science exam was 89% with the state average at 60%.
The school is providing a good education for students in a safe and nurturing environment. It would still be a good idea to visit the school to make sure the environment is best for your child.
