Cali Calmecac Charter School opened in 1998 to provide a very unique multicultural learning environment with a Two Way Bilingual Immersion program, which was a needed program in the area. Students are provided with skills that go beyond their educational years, which include bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural as well as personal and social responsibility. The school does not tolerate bullying and stresses respect, responsibility and safety. The school provides an education to students in kindergarten through 8th grades.
Teachers and staff have high expectations for every student and encourage students to do their best in all aspects of their lives.
Along with core subjects Cali Calmecac Charter School offers extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs which include computer arts, band, dance, drama, sculpture, drawing, cross country, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, gymnastics, football, softball, physical education classes, soccer, volleyball, rock climbing, wrestling, science & technology, yearbook, community service, newspaper, and student government.
Parent’s comments are mixed from being one of the best schools in the area to not being so great. Some parents praised the school while others said they were not doing enough for their children to succeed. Some students love the school are enjoy being a part of the community and even picking up trash to ensure their school is clean and stays a nice place. While others mentioned there is a bully problem at the school.
The Academic Performance Index showed a slight decrease in academic growth from 812 to 811. The California Standards Tests is given to students to determine if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. Examples of the results are 48% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 64% and the percentage of 5th graders that passed the science exam was 61% with the state average at 60%.
With the differences in test results and the comments of parents and students, it would be a good idea to visit the school and talk with other parents prior to enrolling your child.
