California Virtual Academy opened the Kings campus in Simi Valley in 2002. The school is a tuition free public charter school that offers a virtual education using their computers. All materials needed are delivered to the student’s home, which includes CD’s, books, and more. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades.
The curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade includes English, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. The high school curriculum includes core courses that are close to the standard courses seen in other programs, along with comprehensive courses, honors courses, and advanced placement.
Along with core subjects, the school offers computer arts, band, film production, dance, photography, painting, sculpture. The languages taught include Arabic, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hebrew, Korean, Russian, French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and Tagalog. Sports available include Baseball, Badminton, Basketball,
Bicycling, Cheerleading, crew, cross country, field hockey, fencing, football, gymnastics, golf, lacrosse, martial arts, physical education classes, softball, soccer, swimming, rugby, rock climbing, tennis, track, ultimate Frisbee, water polo, wrestling, yoga, and volleyball. Other programs include science & technology, community service, and academic contests.
Parents are very happy with the choices available that help them home school their children while providing the best quality education. Students expressed they are very glad they can attend school at home with many upper grades stating they can also work and still work toward graduation. Some students expressed just how much the school is supportive and helped them recovery credits in order to graduate on time or early.
The Academic Performance Index showed a small increase in academic growth from 756 to 757.
Students that passed the California Standards Tests were up and down quite a bit with some grade levels being below state average in some courses and above state average in other courses. Tenth graders that passed the California High School Exit Exam were 89% in English with the state average at 83% and in math 77% with the state average at 84%.
Since it is a virtual school, it would be best to decide if your child will be a self-starter and work independently in order to do their schoolwork. You should also talk with staff to learn more about the curriculum and ensure that your child will be comfortable in the learning environment.
