Castle Rock School opened as a charter school in 2001 to provide alternative learning environment from traditional schools. The school offers a various education options that are directed by both teachers and parents while focusing on excellence in academics, character development and accountability.
Along with core subjects, the school can participate in extra curricular activities, sports, and other programs. Extra curricular activities include orchestra, film production, painting, photography, and computer arts. Sports offered include wrestling, martial arts, soccer, basketball, and physical education classes. The only other program available at this time is science & technology. One vocational program is available as well, which is technology.
Parents are thrilled with the school and they way their children are thriving attending the school. Teachers are dedicated and very helpful. Students expressed they enjoy attending school and that the teachers are very nice. The school community is more like family offering students and parents the opportunity to be involved in the school as well as their community.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 618 to 664.
The California Standards Tests was used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentages of students at Castle Rock School that passed or exceeded the exams were below average or not published at the time of this writing. In some cases, the percentages were quite a bit below average such as 6th grade math with only 11% passing the exam with the state average at 55%.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders in English Language Arts and Math. In English, 65% passed the exam while the state average was 83% and in math, 58% passed while the state average was 84%.
The school did show a huge increase in academic performance, however, tests scores of all grades and all courses were below state averages. It would be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and talk with other parents prior to enrolling your child.
