Ceiba College Preparatory Academy is a charter school that opened in 2008 in Watsonville. The school provides a college prep curriculum to students in 6th through 9th grades. The school serves students that are underserved in non-urban communities to ensure they can achieve the necessary requirements to attend college and become productive members of their community and society as a whole. The school strives to erase the gap in achievement between low-income youth and those that are privileged by ensuring they can receive a quality college preparatory education in a nurturing and caring learning environment.
Along with core subjects, Ceiba College Preparatory Academy offers a few extra curricular activities including drama, drawing, film production, computer arts, band, academic contests, and student council. The school does not offer any sports programs.
Some parents are not as pleased with the small school that only has one bathroom, however, other parents are looking at the education their children are receiving that the cosmetics of the school. The curriculum is very rigorous which means students must work to achieve success; some parents complained that the work was too hard, while others stated they are glad that their children are working hard to achieve their goals. Students did not have any complaints with teachers, curriculum or staff. The only complaint from students is the lack of sports.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 849 to 845.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above average but there were a few that were below average but in the majority of cases close to average.
The school is providing a good education to students and students are happy attending the school. If you have concerns, you should visit the school; talk with parents, and even staff to help make a decision if the school is the right fit for your child.
