Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia and Performing also known as CHAMPS opened in 2005 to provide a unique learning environment that centers on performing and multimedia arts for students in 8th through 12th grades. The school provides a curriculum that offers students the highest standards that promotes students level of expectations. The courses offered at Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia and Performing include AP, Broadcast communications, English, independent study, liberal arts, math, media arts, performing arts, physical education, robotics, science, social studies, special education, tutoring, and world language.
Along with core subjects, Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia and Performing provides other activities for students which include extra curricular activities like computer arts, drama, film production, dance, chorus, photography, and painting. Other programs available include student council, community service, academic contests, multimedia, yearbook, and science & technology. Sports offered include basketball, marathon, cross country, and track & field.
Parents agree that the staff and teachers are very supportive; however, a change in administration did cause a few issues for a short time. Most parents stated the learning environment is one that is supportive, encouraging, and instills the desire to learn. Students love the school, state that the teachers are very supportive, and listen to their needs. The only complaint heard was the lack of sports.
The Academic Performance Index showed that academic growth stayed the same from the previous year at 784.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students that passed the exams at Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia and Performing was above average, average, and below average according to the grade level and the course. Science courses were mainly above average across the board as was math.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the exam shows that most students are doing very well and the school will have a high rate of graduating students with 93% passing English Language Arts and 86% passing math.
Overall, the school is providing a marvelous education for students in a close-knit encouraging environment. It would still be a good idea to make sure the environment is one that your child will excel before enrolling.
