Choices Charter School also known as San Juan Choices Charter School opened in 1999 to serve students in 7th through 12th grades with an alternative to traditional schools. The school provides a unique learning environment with flexible independent study programs, personal teacher appointments, and small group based classes. The learning objectives set forth by Choices Charter School is to define both short and long goals for each student and give students the tools needed to learn how to respond to complex problems, communicate with others, and use the latest technologies.
Along with core subjects, Choices Charter School provides various activities students can join. These include chorus, band, computer arts, drawing, physical education classes, student council, community service, academic contests, newspaper, and yearbook. The school also offers vocational programs for health careers and technology.
Parents really like the way students can work at their own pace and that their children are enjoying school. The teachers take notice of students needs and ensure that each student receives the tools they need to succeed. Parents expressed that the school is providing students with lessons they will use their entire lives to be productive members of society. Students stated that teachers are the best and work with each student on an individual basis. The most important thing most students expressed was the ability to graduate from high school while working which was amazing.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth stayed the same from the previous year at 642.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students that passed the exams was all below state average in all grades across all courses.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 70% with the state average at 83% and math was 56% with the state average at 84%.
Overall, the school is doing a good job helping students meet their goals. Of course, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and administration concerning the low tests scores.
