Chrysalis Charter School opened in Redding in 1996 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades with a learning environment that meets their individual needs. The school focuses on natural science and math while using both classroom and fieldwork to ensure students are learning in a style that helps them excel. The school uses teaching for understanding for all ages and all subjects of study. The strategy used helps students learn why something works instead of just the way to do things. The school works with each student to ensure they can excel at all subjects. If students are excelling in one subject they will be moved up to the class that matches their abilities instead of keeping them in a class that is boring to them.

Along with core subjects, Chrysalis Charter School provides extra curricular activities, which include painting, drama, chorus, photography and chorus. Sports offered include physical education classes and martial arts. Other programs students can join include community service and science & technology.

Most parents like the school especially the way the students are taught. The majority of parents state the teachers, staff, and administration are really there for the students and work to help each student succeed. The only downside as mentioned by parents is the lack of electives for middle schoolers. Students really like the school and enjoy the field trips that help bring the courses to life. Teachers are devoted and caring. The only complaint from students is the lack of sports.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 865 to 878. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams met state averages or was above average in most grades and across all courses. The only percentage below average was 6th grade with 33% passing while the state average was 55%.

The school is doing a very good job of providing students with an excellent learning environment that is preparing them for the remainder of their educational years as well as instilling the desire to be a life long learner.
