City Arts and Technology High School (CAT High School) is a very unique high school as it ensures that every student that graduates will be prepared to enter a four year college. The school opened in 2004 to provide all students with the tools needed to receive a quality education within their own learning styles.
The school uses a teaching method known as Envision Education, which places an emphasis on a challenging performance assessment system, development of leadership skills, experience in work places, project based learning, and the integration of arts and technology in core subjects.
Along with core subjects, City Arts and Technology High School provides computer arts, photography, drama, painting, dance, and film production. Sports offered at the school are volleyball, cross country, track, soccer, swimming, basketball, and baseball. Special programs found at the school are debate, community service, academic contests, multimedia, newspaper, science & technology, yearbook, and student government. Vocational programs available include technology, professional child care, health careers, and construction & building trades.
The comments from parents are very mixed. The majority of the parents are truly happy with the education their students are receiving; however, they stated that the school has lack of discipline and that students are not well behaved. Some parents expressed they like the majority of teachers and they are doing a good job providing students with an education. Students expressed they are learning and enjoy the environment that is helping them prepare for college.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 691 to 692. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was both above average and below average according to the grade level and the subject. However, most were close to the average whether on one side or the other.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students that passed the exit exams were 80% in English Language Arts and 72% in math.
The school is providing students with a quality education with more than half of the 10th graders being prepared to graduate. Even though, the exact graduation rate is not available, with the exit exams results you can see the school is preparing students for their future.
