CiviCorps Academy opened its doors in 1996 to provide students that are 18 years of age to 24 years of age with the opportunity to graduate high school while also doing job training. For students that have graduated from high school, CiviCorps Academy offers paid job training in their Environment Stewardship Program.
Along with job training and core subjects, the school offers credit recovery programs as well as drama and outdoor adventures such as camping, kayaking, skiing, and rafting to name a few.
Since the majority of students are adults, there were not many comments from parents. Parents only expressed they were glad such a school opened in Oakland to help their children succeed. Students on the other hand, had plenty to say. Many expressed the school is amazing. They stated they love being able to train for a job, go to school, and enjoy all kinds of great activities while making new friends.
The school does not have any test results published for any of the tests that are given to high school students. However, since the program is actually more like job training with the benefit of graduating from high school at the same time, the test results may not be an important factor.
The school is offering individuals that may not have graduated high school a wonderful opportunity as well as those that have graduated but desire to work in a meaningful job that will help the world.
