Crescent View South Charter School opened in 2009 for students in high school. The curriculum offered is personalized while focusing on an independent study program. This will give students the opportunity to focus on either one or two subjects at one time instead of trying to learn several subjects at once. The school works mainly with at risk students that are between the ages of 14 and 19 that wish to obtain a high school diploma. The school not only offers individual lessons plans, but credit retrieval and free tutoring for any student that may need the extra help. The school is strict but offers students freedom without the use of class bells. Students can choose from morning, afternoon, or evening classes while working at their own pace to achieve their diploma.
The school does not offer any extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs, but focuses on the credits needed to graduate high school and receive a diploma.
Parents are happy that the school is helping their children receive their high school. Many parents commented they were afraid since their students were behind in credits that they would give up on graduating; however, with this school they are excited about working toward receiving their diploma. Many students stated they are very happy that they can attend school and work at the same time. Other students expressed they are very excited about the credit retrieval program.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 639 to 689. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Crescent View South Charter School was below average across the board. The California High School Exit Exam is given to students in 10th grade to ensure they will be ready to graduate from high school. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 71% with the state average at 83% and in math 58% passed with the state average at 84%.
Even though California Standards Tests had students below average, the Academic Performance Index and the California High School Exit Exam showed that, the school is doing an exceptional job providing an education.
