Desert Heights Charter School opened in 2000 to provide students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade with an alternative to public education in a safe, nurturing learning environment.
The school centers their curriculum on high performing, honors track, and accelerated credit learning. Along with core subjects, Desert Heights Charter School offers extra curricular activities including chorus, band, choir, instrumental music lessons, dance, drama, and painting. Sports available include basketball, cheerleading, baseball, cross country, football, soccer, softball, track, and volleyball. Student clubs include newspaper and yearbook.
Desert Heights Charter School has mixed reviews. A few parents are happy with some of the teachers expressing they are caring and involved with their students. On the other hand, the majority of parents state the school is not challenging and their children are falling behind in courses. Many are electing to remove their children and place them in a different charter school. Some parents have explained that staff changes have caused many of the issues with the school but that their children are excelling now and the school is getting back on track with qualified and caring teachers.
Students at Desert Heights Charter School participated in the AIMS exam which measures if students have mastered core subjects. The percentages of students in this school that passed or exceeded the exam along with the average of students across the state are listed below.
In reading, 84% of 3rd graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 76%, in writing 93% with the state at 79%, and in math 79% with the state average at 68%.
In reading, 90% of 4th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 75%, in science 84% with the state at 60%, in writing 94% with the state at 83%, and in math 74% with the state average at 65%.
In reading, 86% of 5th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 79%, in writing 58% with the state at 55%, and in math 66% with the state average at 63%.
In reading, 90% of 6th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 81%, in writing 63% with the state at 56%, and in math 61% with the state average at 59%.
In reading, 90% of 7th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 82%, in writing 56% with the state at 53%, and in math 63% with the state average at 61%.
In reading, 77% of 8th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 71%, in science 64% with the state at 63%, in writing 88% with the state at 86%, and in math 57% with the state average at 54%.
