Discovery Charter School – Tracy Learning Center opened in 2001 for students in grades in 5th through 8th grades. The school offers small class sizes with an average enrollment of 360 students per year. The curriculum is project based utilizing a variety of instruction and performance based assessments. The school also provides a more individualized lesson plan while presenting small group instruction along with service learning projects. Teachers work with students to ensure their success and help them become life long learners.
Along with core subjects, Discovery Charter School at the Tracy Learning Center offers extra curricular activities, which include drama and chorus. Sports available include baseball, physical education classes, volleyball, basketball, softball, cheerleading, football, and soccer. Other programs and student clubs include science & technology, community service, yearbook, student council, newspaper, and academic contests.
The opinions of parents are mixed. Some love the school and the curriculum, praising the accelerated program. On the other hand, a few parents had complaints that the older grades were responsible for grading the lower grade schoolwork. Some parents expressed that there is a lack of communication between teachers and parents while others really like the teachers and are in touch all the time. Students stated that in most cases, they like their teachers but did have problems with a few.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 821 to 845.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Discovery Charter School – Tracy Learning Center was mainly above average. However, math percentages were on the low side in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades while 8th grade was above average.
Discovery Charter School – Tracy Learning Center according to the exams is doing a good job of providing students with the tools necessary to receive a quality education.
