Downtown Value School opened in 2002 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers a structured learning environment that is based on the urban Catholic School but does not offer the formal religious instruction. The school focuses on academics with school based decision making with a main center being faith based. The small classroom sizes allow more individualized attention and better learning opportunities.
Along with core subjects, Downtown Value School offers a few sport programs including cross country, basketball, and physical education classes. The school also provides a very other programs students can join like newspaper, science & technology, and yearbook.
The majority of parents are very happy with the teachers and the curriculum as well as the values the school holds dear. The main complaint was with the principal and vice principal. Many parents speak Spanish and do not understand English; the principal does not speak Spanish and therefore cannot communicate effectively with these parents. Overall, the parents work together as a team with teachers to help students succeed. Students enjoy the school and like the teachers. The major complaint from students is the lack of interesting extra curricular activities.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 800 to 816.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Downtown Value School was mixed with some above average, some average, and some above average. Examples include 59% of 5th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 63%, 70% of 3rd graders passed the Math exam with the state average at 69%, and 76% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 52%.
With the comments of parents and the percentage of students passing the exams, the school is doing a good job providing students with the educational opportunities needed to succeed. It would be a good idea to visit the school to ensure the environment is one in which your child will excel.
