Edison Charter Academy opened in 1998 for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers a unique learning environment in that along with the core curriculum the school offers daily instruction in Drama, Art, Music, and physical education. With only 230 students enrolled per year, the school has small class sizes with dual immersion programs in the lower grade levels. The student body is diverse with 69% Hispanic, 21% African American, 3% Filipino, and 1% of other ethnicities.
Along with core subjects, Edison Charter Academy offers computer arts, dance, drama, and painting. Sports available include basketball, soccer, volleyball, playworks, physical education classes, and yoga. Student clubs include gardening, yearbook, newspaper, science & technology, student council, academic contests, and community service.
Parents had nothing but positive remarks concerning Edison Charter Academy. The teachers were mentioned to be caring, knowledgeable, and devoted to the students. The arts program is the main reason many parents choose the school for their children. Students expressed they really enjoy going to school and love their teachers. Some parents stated that the school has changed for the better over the last few years and highly recommend it to other parents.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 780 to 794. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Edison Charter Academy was mixed with averages above and below average. Examples include 57% of 4th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 67% and 85% of 5th graders passing the math exam with the state average at 65%.
The school is doing a much better performance in test scores than past years and students are enjoying attending school. Parents stated that the school is doing a quality job of educating students.
