Edward B. Cole Academy opened in 2003 as a charter school to serve students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The school offers small class size along with devoted and dedicated teachers that work with students on a personal level. The school works diligently to meet the educational needs of a community that is mainly non-English speaking, Latino, and low income. The school provides a core curriculum with focus on discipline and respect.
Along with core subjects, Edward B. Cole Academy offers extra curricular activities, sports and other programs including chorus, drawing, physical education classes, softball, soccer, basketball, community service, yearbook, newspaper, student council, and academic contests.
Parents expressed that the teachers help students stay focused and new students adapt to the school environment. Most parents stated that each student is treated with respect and receive the attention they need to learn and grow in a nurturing learning environment. Students stated they really like the teachers and that the students are very nice. Many said they are making more friends here and enjoying going to school.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 780 to 777. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Edward B. Cole Academy was mixed. Percentages ranged from below average to above average. Examples include the percentage of 3rd graders that passed the math exam was 82% with the state average at 69% and 48% of 4th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 67%.
Edward B. Cole Academy is providing the educational tools and encouragement students need to prepare them for the remainder of their educational years.
