Eel River Charter School opened in 1994 in the community of Covelo serving students in grades kindergarten through 8th grades. The school provides a holistic hands-on thematic approach to learning basic skills. Eel River Charter school teachers are 100% fully credentialed with years of experience. Teachers work with students on an individual level to ensure each student can learn in a style that works best for the student. The student body is diverse with 63% American Indian, 35% White, and 2% Asian.

At this time, the school does not offer extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs. Other activities involved with learning replace the extra curricular activities.

Parents stated the school is doing an excellent job of providing a quality education to their children. Most expressed they are happy that the school opened in their rural area to help offer the community an alternative to traditional schools while providing project based learning with a focus on the environment and small class size. Students love the projects and enjoy all the great activities that are helping them learn.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 603 to 605. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. At the time of this writing, the percentage of students passing the exams was not available for Eel River Charter School.

The comments of parents and students are all positive for the school, which is a good indicator, however, the lack of tests scores make it a bit harder to determine if the school is performing well and providing students with the necessary tools to succeed. It would be in your best interest to visit the school and talk with parents with students enrolled prior to enrolling your child to ensure you are making the best choice for your child’s education.
