Encore High School for the Performing and Visual Arts is a charter school that opened in 2008 to serve students in the Hesperia area in grades 7th through 12th. The school offers a safe environment that allows students to be creative and challenged in a nurturing learning environment. The curriculum is college prep for those that desire to attend a University in the pursuit of the arts. Encore High School for the Performing and Visual Arts offers honors courses as well as full inclusion of special education programs. Students are given a pre college block schedule that allows them to take 8 to 10 classes per semester along with extra academic courses for those that wish to graduate early.
Honors courses are offered as well as full inclusion special education programs. Students can also opt to take extra academic courses and plan for early graduation. Encore’s unique pre-college block scheduling allows students to take 8 to 10 classes each semester.
Along with core subjects, Edison-Bethune Charter Academy provides extra curricular activities including drawing, drama, sculpture, dance, chorus, photography, computer arts, band, orchestra, band, and film production. Sports offered include football, cheerleading, golf, basketball, soccer, martial arts, and physical education classes. Other programs students can join are science & technology, debate, multimedia, community service, yearbook, academic contests, newspaper, and student council.
The majority of the comments from parents were negative as well as from students. It was very difficult to find a few parents that had good remarks. The ones that offered positive comments only spoke about the performing arts classes and performances. There were many negative remarks regarding teachers that do not hold full credentials, uncleanness of the school, and even rude staff. A few students expressed how if you receive a failing grade instead of helping, the student was expelled.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 777 to 775. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Encore High for the Performing and Visual Arts was mainly below average with some below average and others above average. Examples include 18% of 7th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 86%, 50% of 8th graders passed the science exam with the state average at 66%, and 70% of 9th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 57%.
the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 91% with the average at 83% and in math 84% with the average being 84%.
