Ernestine C. Reems Academy of Technology and Art opened in 1999 as a charter school for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school works with each child personally in a community-learning environment. The curriculum is standards based blended with art, dance, music, and character development. The student population is diverse with 82% African American, 17% Hispanic or Latino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 1% unspecified.

Along with core subjects, Ernestine C. Reems Academy of Technology and Art offer extra curricular activities, which include dance, chorus, and computer arts. Sports available include physical education classes, swimming, track, and basketball. Other programs include academic contests and student government.

The majority of parents are very happy with the school and agree with the way in which students are learning. Most parents stated the curriculum is excellent and teachers are devoted and helpful. A few parents were not as happy with staff in the office that seem to be rude at times. Students expressed they like their teachers and enjoy going to school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 712 to 669. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams Ernestine C. Reems Academy of Technology and Art was mixed with some above and other below state averages. Examples include 2nd graders that passed the English Language Arts exam was 57% with the state average at 58%, the percentage of 3rd graders that passed the English Language Arts exam was 17% with the state average at 48%, and 48% of 5th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 65%.
