Escuela Popular Accelerated Learning Center opened in 2002 to provide students in kindergarten through 12th grades with a dual language immersion curriculum that targets English language learners. The student population is diverse with 97% Hispanic or Latino, 2% African American, 1% Filipino, and 1% white.
Along with core subjects, Escuela Popular Accelerated Learning Center offers band, volleyball, tennis, swimming, physical education classes, baseball, softball, golf, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, football, newspaper, yearbook, science & technology. Vocational programs available are technology, professional child care and development, law enforcement, cosmetology, and agriculture.
There are mixed opinions regarding the school. Some parents are very pleased with the learning center that offers services to the entire family. Even parents can work to receive their high school diploma as the school provides free daycare for children that are not old enough to attend school. Non-English speaking students stated the school is wonderful and is helping them learn English while providing them a great education. Some parents are not happy with the school as it caters to non-English speaking student body.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 595 to 619. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Escuela Popular Accelerated Learning Center was mixed. Examples include 78% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 69%, 50% of 5th graders passed the science exam with 60% being the state average, and 42% of 8th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 62%.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. No information was available on the percentage of students passing this exam.
