Fireweed Academy is a public school in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and hence no tuition fee is charged. Students at Fireweed Academy go through standardized testing. Although, the school is expected to meet State benchmarks, it retains the flexibility to set its own educational goals, assessments and methods. This allows it to raise the bar and offer individual learning plans to its students.
Formerly the Homer Charter School, Fireweed Academy came into existence in 1997, when concerned parents, teachers and other members of the community decided that Homer needs better options in education. Like other KPBSD schools, this school also receives public funding and the teachers have to meet very high standards. The school (grades 3-6) are taught in four occupied classrooms within the West Homer Elementary School.
Among other methods of learning, students embark on an in-depth study of a specific theme. All material, content and assessments are integrated into that theme. Through this theme immersion, students get to use a variety of methods and learning styles. The school takes in a limited number of students each year and the student to teacher ratio is 17:1.
Multi-age classrooms give students the exposure they need. Teachers are looped with the students through their grade levels, so that they understand the needs of their students better. Mathematics, Socrates seminars, reading and writing are given importance at Fireweed. Music, arts and movement are all activities that are integrated into the project work and group activities.
