Friendly House Academia del Pueblo Elementary Review

Friendly House Academia del Pueblo Elementary opened in 2000 in Phoenix to provide a community based educational program offering a bilingual educational environment with a student body that is 97% Hispanic. The public charter school not only provides the core subjects but also extra curricular activities where students can enjoy social activities, sports, and clubs. These include computer arts, painting, dance, basketball, physical education classes, student council, yearbook, and academic contests

There are mixed feeling among parents with children attending the school. Most are very happy with the teachers and school overall, but some have complaints that the attention spent with the students is not as good as they would like. Parents would also like to see more communication and ways they can become involved in the school. One parent explained the school was very good a few years ago but their ranking and overall attentiveness has gone down over the last few years.

Looking at the percentages of students that passed or exceeded the AIMS testing compared to state averages may provide more knowledge as to the educational improvements that need to be made.

In reading, only 55% of students in 3rd passed or exceeded the exam with the state at 76%, in writing 76% with the state at 79%, and in math 45% with the state at 68%.

In reading, 65% of 4th graders passed or exceeded with the state average at 75%, in science 41% with the state at 60%, in writing 83% with the state at 83%, and in math 41% with the state at 65%.

In reading, 72% of 5th graders passed or exceeded with the state at 79%, in writing 41% with the state at 55%, and in math 38% with the state at 63%.

In reading, 65% of 6th graders with the state at 81%, in writing 29% with the state at 56%, and in math 35% with the state at 59%.

7th and 8th graders also showed lower percentages than state averages including reading 73% for 7th graders with the state at 82%, 8th graders 45% with the state at 71%, in writing 35% of 7th graders with the state average at 53% and 72% of 8th graders with the state at 86%, and in math 7th graders were at 44% with the state at 61% while 8th graders were at 32% with the state at 54%.

In order to graduate from high school, students must pass the AIMS test in 10th grade. The scores above are not fairing well for many of these students to be able to graduate unless they can receive quality instruction in the school years ahead of them. It would be in your best interest before enrolling your child in the school to learn more about the low percentages of students meeting the standards of the exam.
