Genesis Academy opened their charter school in 1997 for high risk or out of school students in grades 9th through 12 grades to provide them with a tailored curriculum that would meet their individual needs. The study body of the school is 80% Hispanic. The school has an average enrollment of 115 students per year and offers block scheduling.
The school works with students to ensure they succeed whether this is to go forward to higher learning facilities or to join the workforce. Students that show they have the attitude and behavior that is required to go to college can also enroll in college courses while still in high school. Courses at the school are rigorous and students must put for an effort in order to achieve their goals of graduating high school. The best part is teachers are willing to provide one on one instruction for all students that need the extra help to ensure they can meet their goals.
Since the school mainly has students that are considered high risk of dropping of school or have already stopped attending school, most parents are reluctant to offer their opinions on the school. On the other hand, students that do want to receive a high school diploma or go on to college express they are very happy with the school and the opportunity the school is providing for them.
As with all public schools in the state of Arizona including public charter schools, students in 10th grades are required to pass or exceed the AIMS series in order to graduate high school. In reading, 30% of 10th graders at Genesis Academy passed or exceeded the exam, in science 4%, in writing 32%, and in math 11%. This does not mean the other students will not receive their diploma but will have to take the tests again in order to graduate but they still have their 11th and 12th grades to accomplish their goals.
