Hickman Charter School opened in 2000 to provide an alternative to families looking for something different from traditional schools that would allow them to provide their children with more individualized lesson plans. The school offers a variety of educational options that include distance learning, home study, and classroom studies. The school blends the best online classes with on site classes to ensure students receive the best quality education available. The school provides courses for students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade.
Along with core subjects, Hickman Charter School offers extra curricular activities including sculpture, painting, drama, chorus, dance, photography, computer arts, band, and orchestra. The school offers several different languages unlike the majority of schools in the area. The languages offered include French, Cantonese, Arabic, German, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Russian, and Spanish. The sports are soccer, martial arts, basketball, track, physical education classes, yoga, gymnastics, and baseball. Other programs available are debate, science & technology, community service, yearbook, and academic contests.
The majority of parents expressed that Hickman Charter School is wonderful asset to the community and that the school is great in all aspects. Teachers and staff are very dedicated to students and the curriculum is amazing. Students expressed that they really like the learning environments and that teachers are very helpful in every way.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 820 to 833. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Hickman Charter School was mixed according to grade level and subjects. Examples include 61% of 2nd graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the average at 58%, 53% of 3rd graders passed math with the average at 69%, and 82% of 7th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the average at 62%.
