High Tech High – North County opened in 2007 for students in grades 9th through 11th. The curriculum offered at the North County campus is project based, rigorous and challenging for optima results. They focus the teaching on personalized learning with a focus on liberal arts, life sciences and biotechnology.

Besides core subjects there are extracurricular activities offered to challenge students and develop confidence and team work. These courses are band, computer arts, video/film production, dance, drawing/painting theater/drama, Spanish, debate, science, technology, yearbook, community service, academic contests, student government, radio/video and vocational programs in technology. Sports are also offered including volleyball, yoga, P.E., fencing, basketball, soccer, and football and cross country.

Parents graded High Tech High – North County highly in the areas of curriculum and motivation. Some parents loved the teachers while others thought they were too inexperienced to teach. With project-based learning, the results of grades were highly impressive. Students are very happy with the teachers and enjoy going to school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 801 to 790. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Test results for the students at High Tech High – North County showed that more students passed the exams throughout all of the age groups as compared to the state average. Only one group fell short. On the Chemistry exam 22% of 10th graders passed and the state average was 51%.
