Learning Choice Academy – La Mesa opened in 2004 for students in grades Kindergarten through 12th. At this school the academic program focuses on home school teachings with the help of parents. There are multiple sites to choose from for each student to learn at their own pace.
Students can choose from a variety of extracurricular activities including an arts program that is quite extensive. Those classes are band, computer arts, orchestra, video/film production, chorus, dance, photography, ceramics/sculpture, drawing/painting and theater/drama. Other programs at Learning Choice Academy – La Mesa include Arabic, German, and Japanese, Russian, French, Italian, and Spanish, rock climbing, martial arts/self defense, gymnastics and physical education classes. Other programs offered are academic contests, newspaper, community service, yearbook, science, technology and vocational programs in agriculture, cosmetology, law enforcement, automotive, food service, production and management, professional child care, construction/building trades, heath careers and technology.
Parents love all of the courses that are offered at Learning Choice Academy – La Mesa and the focus on careers after college. The school was also praised for its repetition to ensue learning, the offer of day classes and the friendly teachers. Students are very happy attending the school and the helpful teachers.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 731 to 756. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The test results at Learning Choice Academy – La Mesa were mixed. Some were above the state average and some were below. For example in 6th grade, 30% passed the Math exam against the state average of 55%.
California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students here exceeded the English Language Arts exam over the state and fell just slightly below on the Math exam.
