Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise opened in 2005 to provide students with an alternative to traditional school settings for students in 6th through 10th grades. The school curriculum is based on state standards as well as meets the University of California A-G requirements. The school offers comprehensive courses in visual & performing arts, core and advanced principles of economics, enterprise, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum used is a challenging college prep curriculum that will ensure students are prepared for college.
Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities including drama, drawing, dance, chorus, computer arts, and film production. Sports students can join include physical education classes, football, soccer, and basketball. The only other program available is multimedia.
The comments from parents and student differ quite a bit. Most parents are very pleased with the challenging curriculum and the teachers. A few students stated that older students as well as a few teachers are not nice at all and that the teachers are not very helpful.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 623 to 641. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was below average in all courses and all grade levels.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 66% with the state average at 54% and in math 60% with the state average at 84%.
With the percentage of students passing the exams being below average and the remarks of students, it would be a good idea to do some research before enrolling your child. You should take a tour and talk with other parents that have students enrolled to ensure the school is a good fit for your family.
