Madera Independent Study Academy opened in 2008 for students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth. The objective at Madera is to give students more educational choices and opportunities. The curriculum is based around artistic, creative and imaginative ideas.
The student population of Madera focuses on those that are educationally disadvantaged. The full potential of each student is the goal with an education model that goes against the traditional teachings to offer flexibility combined with different methods of instruction. At this time, the school does not offer extra curricular activities, sports or other programs.
The caring staff was at the top of the parent reviews. They also loved that their children had a place to turn to when traditional schooling did not work. Students that were not doing so well socially at school have come to Madera and turned that around. Parents and students alike expressed the desire for the school to add more activities to help students become involved in other programs.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 420 to 451. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The test results for students at Madera Independent Study Academy showcased scores lower than the state averages. For example on the 10th grade Science exam 9% passed against the 53% state average.
California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. 29% of students passed the English exam. The state was 83% while 45% passed the Math exam against the state average of 84%.
The school is doing a fair job of providng a quality education in a safe learning environment. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with administration and teachers to learn if the shool is a good fit for yoru family.
