Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School opened in 2006 to provide an alternative education for students in 9th through 12th grades with a college preparatory curriculum. The school strives to prepare students to be successful in a four-year college as well as pursue doctoral degrees in STEM fields. The small close-knit learning environment is one that the school takes pride in providing.
Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities including orchestra, band, drama, and film production. Sports offered include yoga, wrestling, water polo, rugby, physical education classes, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading. Other programs offered include science & technology, community service, yearbook, multimedia, student government, newspaper, and academic contests. The school also offers a variety of languages such as Tagalog, Japanese, German, and Spanish.
The majority of parents are very pleased with the unique curriculum that is geared toward ensuring students have the opportunity to enter in 4 year college. Students expressed that the small knit community is a great encouraging atmosphere.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 809 to 785.The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 62% of 9th graders passed the biology exam with the state average at 60% and 59% of 9th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the average at 60%.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 90% with the average at 83% and in math 86% passed with the average at 84%.
