Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy Middle School opened in 1999 to provide the community with an alternative to traditional schools. The school offers a core curriculum with modern environment and experiences, which include school, based enterprises, community service, and integrated technology. The school serves a diverse student body population in 6th through 12th grades with a challenging and rigorous curriculum set in a disciplined, safe, and nurturing environment. The diverse student body is comprised of 56% Hispanic or Latino, 21% African American, 14% Filipino, 11% White, 3% Asian, 1% American Indian, 1% Pacific Islander, and 3% unspecified.
Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities and student clubs such as dance, ColorGuard, Asian Pacific Islander, Yu-gi-oh!, Yearbook, Latin Roots, Leadership, and Prom Committee. At this time the only sports offered is physical education classes.
The comments from parents and students were mixed. Many parents were happy with the curriculum and the small class size, however, on the end of there are parents that are not happy that the school does not offer sports or athletics of any kind besides physical education classes. Some parents praise the after school programs offered with such activities as guitar lessons, computer training, FREE tutoring, Karaoke class, and Wii Fit. Students overall are happy with the school, but stated they would like to play sports.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 764 to 766.The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was below state average in all grade levels and all subjects but was close in some such as 58% of 8th graders passed the English Language Arts with the state average 59%.
The school is doing a good job providing students with the tools needed to receive a quality education. If you have any concerns, you should visit the school to ensure the environment is one in which your child will grow.
