Mark West Charter School opened in 2004 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grade with a curriculum that is centered on Sean Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
The school is a small and caring community that offers students a strong core foundation with a variety of elective classes. Families that choose to be a part of the Independent Home Study are offered a day on the campus to enjoy the library, computer lab, art, music, and socialization. Older students that study at home are invited to join with the middle school students on the campus to enjoy various electives as well as a large array of field trips.
Along with core subjects, Mark West Charter School offers extra curricular activities, which includes drama, photography, film production, band, orchestra, computer arts, painting, and sculpture. Sports available are basketball, physical education classes, and volleyball. Other programs offered are debate, multimedia, science & technology, yearbook, newspaper, and community service. The school has two vocational programs, which are technology and agriculture.
Parents are quite impressed with the communication from teachers that help parents ensure their children are reaching their goals with project-based assignments. The staff and teachers are very helpful and have the student’s best interest at heart. Students are very happy with the teachers but did state they would like to see a few more sports offered.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 847 to 872. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages but there was one below average, which was 29% of 8th graders passed the general math exam with the state average at 32%.
The school is providing an excellent education in a safe and nurturing environment. If you have any concerns it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school to ensure the environment is one in which your child will excel.
