Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts opened in 2000 for students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers a college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on visual arts, performing arts, and literacy. The diverse student body is comprised of 59% White, 11% Hispanic or Latino, 2% American Indian, 1% Asian, 1% African American, 1% Pacific Islander, and 25% unspecified.
Along with core subjects, Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts provides an array of extra curricular activities including sculpture, painting, drama, dance, chorus, photography, orchestra, film production, computer arts, and band. The school offers four languages, which are French, Latin, Spanish, and German. Sports available are cross-country, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, physical education classes, golf, martial arts, soccer, softball, swimming, yoga, track, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. Other programs student can join are debate, multimedia, yearbook, newspaper, student council, academic contests, community service, and science & technology. Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts also offers vocational program, which include construction, automotive, agriculture, cosmetology, health careers, professional childcare, law enforcement, and technology.
Parents are very impressed with the school and the staff. Many of the parents choose the school due to their children’s talent that was being ignored in traditional schools. Parents really love the curriculum and all the great activities the school offers. Students stated they never thought that learning could be so much fun.
The Academic Performance Index showed in increase in academic growth from 838 to 873. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages but there were a few below average including 44% of 8th graders passed the Algebra exam with the state average at 49% and 37% of 9th graders passed the geometry exam with the state at 48%, as examples.
