Mattole Valley Charter School opened in 1998 to provide students in kindergarten through 12th grade with an alternative from traditional school settings. The school offers an educational program via distance learning utilizing curriculum based materials as well as site-based instruction.
Along with core subjects, Mattole Valley Charter School offers extra curricular activities including painting, chorus, orchestra, sculpture, dance, band, drama, film production, photography, and computer arts. Unlike traditional schools, the school offers a wide array of languages, which are French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Hebrew, Cantonese, Arabic, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and Tagalog. Sports available are yoga, water polo, volleyball, track, rock climbing, rugby, tennis, swimming, softball, soccer, lacrosse, martial arts, physical education classes, gymnastics, golf, football, cross country, field hockey, crew, cheerleading, bicycling, badminton, basketball, and baseball. Other programs students can enjoy are science & technology, multimedia, and academic contests.
Most parents are very pleased with the distance-learning program and dedicated teachers that help each student along with their parents to ensure that every child can receive a quality education. Students love the school and the great activities the school has to offer.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 756 to 745. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams mixed. A few examples include 73% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state at 69%, 53% of 4th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 71%, and 27% of 10th graders passed the science exam with the average at 53%.
