Maya High School Review

Maya High School is a charter school that opened in 1996 that provides an alternative to public school for 600 students per year in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a nurturing and encouraging environment while preparing students to enter the workforce or the opportunities of higher education. The school focuses on the AIMS exams and ensures students can pass the exams in order to graduate high school. The curriculums used include project based, virtual school, standards based, direct instruction, and accelerated credit learning. The scheduling offered includes block and extended which ensures the needs of the students are met. The school proves to be there to help each student on their level with other resources that are not found at other schools in the area such as differentiated learning programs, counseling, mentoring, acceleration, remediation, and college or career counseling.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs like dance, drawing, painting, photography, design, basketball, cheerleading, football, volleyball, soccer, step team, student council, and yearbook.

Parents love the idea that their children can graduate early or receive the help they need if they have fallen behind in credits. The students are very happy with the curriculum and the fun activities the school offers. The teachers are caring and work with students on an equal level.

The AIMS testing scores show a completely different side to the school. All 10th graders must pass the exams in order to graduate high school; students were below average in all courses. In reading, the percentage was 47% below, science was 32% below, writing was 40% below, and 48% below in math.

It would be in your best interest to look for a different school since the majority of students did not pass the exam. You could at least speak with other parents to learn more about the school before making your final decision.
