Merced Scholars Charter School opened in 2004 to serve students in 6th through 12th grades with a curriculum that is based on their own interests and academic strengths. The school creates a personal lesson plan that ensures the success of each student. The curriculum is based on California state standards but provides more opportunities for students that wish to attend college upon graduation.
Along with core subjects, Merced Scholars Charter School offers extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate, which include dance, chorus, photography, sculpture, drawing, drama, computer arts, band, film production and orchestra. The school offers more language options than traditional schools as well with French, Spanish, Korean, Italian, Latin, and Mandarin offered. Sports available include soccer, lacrosse, football, cross-country, bicycling, basketball, cheerleading, golf, martial arts, softball, track, wrestling, yoga, volleyball, tennis, swimming, physical education classes, gymnastics, fencing, and baseball. Other programs offered include science & technology, debate, newspaper, academic contests, community service, yearbook, multimedia, and student government. Vocational programs include construction, technology, health careers, automotive, food service, professional childcare, cosmetology, and agriculture.
Students and parents alike are truly impressed with the school. Most parents stated the teachers are highly devoted to their students. Students like the one on one attention and the great opportunities the school offers.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 750 to 755. The statewide goal is 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages across all grade levels and courses. The only exams that were below state average were US History and English Language Arts in 11th grade, which were only a few percentages below average.
