Milestones Charter School Review

Milestones Charter School opened in 1999 for students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grades, with an average enrollment of 415 students.

The school offers small classes that help each student excel in a family style environment. Along with core subjects the school knows the importance of extra curricular activities and sports which include ceramics, chorus, drawing, drama, dance, film production, computer arts, band, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, crew, cross country, gymnastics, football, martial arts, physical education classes, swimming, softball, track, soccer, and volleyball. Student clubs include science & technology, yearbook, multimedia, student council, and newspaper.

The comments offered by parents are quite different with some praising the school while others state the school is terrible. Most parents expressed the school does not allow bullying and has caring teachers. Other say the school is not teaching the students the skills they need to succeed. With such large differences, it would be very hard to tell if the school is good or not if you only listen to the parents that expressed their opinion.

A look at the percentage of students that passed or exceeded the AIMS exams may shed some light on the true nature of the school when it comes to providing a quality education. Percentages of students in 3rd grade that passed the reading and writing exams were higher than state averages, while math percentages were lower. Fourth graders scored higher in reading, science, writing, and math. Fifth graders percentages in reading were equal to state average while writing and math were below average. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders scored higher in reading, writing, and math.

Well, if you notice the percentages that were above average, you would notice that most are above average, so the bad comments about the school not teaching students is completely wrong. If I were you before enrolling my child in the school, I would take a tour and talk with other parents. This is just to make sure that other things are not underlying below the surface.
