Montague Charter Academy opened in 1996 for students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grades. The school is home in Pacoima with an enrollment of 97% Hispanic or Latino students. The community overall is happy with the school and the way there are providing students with a quality education. The curriculum is based on the state standards in all subjects and uses knowledge based educational tools.
At this time, the school does not offer any extra curricular activities or sports. Most students and parents believe this is the downside to the school. Most would like to see more activities for students to enjoy besides learning from books.
Parents are pleased with the grades and performance they are seeing with their students academics, but once again would like to see more interaction that will also help improve social skills. Students stated that the rigorous schedule could be tough but that the majority of teachers are very nice and help them when they need the help. The school recently changed principals and there are parents on both sides of the fence with the changes that have been made. Some parents really love the new principal whereas other parents stated the school is going downhill since the change.
The Academic Performance Index showed a 6-point gain in academic growth to 800. Since the statewide goal is 800, teachers and parents are very proud that the school met the goal.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
Even with the increase in the API, the students passing the exams were mixed. Examples include 45% of 2nd graders passed the English Language Arts exam, which is lower than the previous year at 54%, in math 66% of 4th graders passed the exam, which is also lower than the previous year of 73% and 61% of 5th graders passed the math exam with the previous year 57% passed.
Overall, Montague Charter School is providing an exceptional education for students. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school and speak with other parents that have students attending the school prior to enrollment.
