Monterey Bay Charter School opened in 2006 in Pacific Grove to provide families with an alternative to traditional school. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades with a curriculum based on the Waldorf method. The student population is 71% White.
Along with core subjects, Monterey Bay Charter School offers various subjects due to the Waldorf method that includes art within the framework of the curriculum. Students in 6th through 8th grades are also taught technology/environmental education as well as perform at least 15 hours of community service each year. Students receive credit for community service, which may include work on the school campus or volunteering outside the school for organizations.
Some parents are not as enthusiastic with the sports and extra curricular activities offered as they are with the curriculum. The only available club is gardening with extra curricular activities being visual arts, painting, orchestra, and choir. Practically every parent was very impressed with the Waldorf method that provides students with real life skills instead of just book learning. Teachers are described as using various methods of teachings to help each student on an individual basis to ensure that each child understands and is learning at the best of their ability. Most parents are very excited that the school is working with students to instill eco-friendly behavior and the love of learning. Students stated they really love the school better than other schools they have attended, but as mentioned earlier would like the opportunity to join sports such as baseball or volleyball.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth of 21 points to 877. The statewide goal is 800.
